Rural fire departments need more personnel

October 14, 2023 by susanmerchant@gmail.com |

Community firefighters from volunteer departments are family, friends, neighbors. They are people you know, and they are the first line of defense in many emergency situations. In rural areas, volunteer fire departments are reaching a crisis point — they need more volunteers.

Did you know that of the total estimated 1,041,200 firefighters across the country, 676,900 are volunteers? According to a report by the National Volunteer Fire Council, volunteers make up 65% of firefighters in the United States.
